Here are three simple ways to evaluate the quality of a mug; once you have selected a good one, you can even customize it to reflect your personal style.
Look
When you pick up a mug, first examine its appearance and texture. A high-quality mug features a smooth, evenly colored glaze and a rim that is not misshapen. Next, check that the handle is attached straight; a crooked handle indicates a defective product. Also, inspect the connection point between the handle and the body for any "glaze shrinkage" (bare spots); such flaws suggest poor craftsmanship. Finally, hold the mug up to the sunlight; a good-quality mug should exhibit a certain degree of translucency.
Listen
Listen to the sound the mug makes. Gently flick the body of the mug with your finger; a high-quality mug will produce a crisp, ringing tone. A dull sound suggests the material used is impure. You should also listen to the sound made where the lid meets the body; a crisp sound accompanied by a slight echo indicates good quality.
Touch
Run your hand over the mug to feel its texture. A smooth surface free of pinholes or blemishes indicates excellent quality. Additionally, check the bottom of the mug to ensure there is no "sticking" (rough patches or residue) caused by improper handling during the glazing process.
